Okay everyone, I know we've all been there before.  We sit down to watch one of our favorite programs, and there is something either "comical" or just an episode where someone is supposed to be "Bipolar" in the show.  (Example:  Law and Order SVU - my favorite show).

How does it make you feel when you see either the accuracy, inaccuracy or a depiction of someone with Bipolar?

Hugs,

good question chelbie
i get annoyed with it as they always get portrayed as sad, completetly nuts individuals that cant fit into society and should be hidden away.they seem to focus on the extreme bad moods and never the inbetween where you could be slightyl manic permanently or happy and sad at the same time.
they never show enough of others who are in their lives and how it effects them unless it is really bad then they will show it....
so it does piss me off as i dont want others thinking that is how i am

I have seen on television and movies where the person has a mental illness, but I can't say that I've seen a show where the person is BiPolar. I think I would just be interested in seeing it and if it was accurate, I would be thankful for them showing it. Of course, if it wasn't accurate, I wouldn't be so happy. I wish their were more awareness of Bp and I think television is the best way to spread the knowledge. Whether I would be pleased with the program would depend on the stigma that it represents.

there are so many symptoms which us bipolars exhibit, it's difficult to judge whether the actor is "right on" playing a bipolar part or not.  at least, that's how i see it.

my room mate and i are both bipolar... she is bipolar 2 and i'm bipolar 1.  we are different as night and day in our symptoms.

she is usually negative and depressed (and when i say usually, i mean usually), while i'm very anxious, and have a lot going on in my brain.  plus we are opposite in personality (which has nothing to do with bipolar disorder)....

anyway, i suppose that, if there were a television show which included a bipolar person, and i wanted to watch it, i would.  sometimes i wonder if shows, such as Law and Order, sometimes include mental illness in their shows to create more awareness in the public?  it's hard to tell!

Hello everyone,

My memory is bad so bare with me as I can't remember names of shows and actors.  In my opinion most of the shows that have any kind of mental illness depict them in a chair drooling and watching a TV that is turned off.  This is somewhat exaggerated so don't take me too serious.

In the movie "12 Monkeys" I don't know what each patient/actor was trying to portray.

If I want to see an actor depicting mental problems, I just watch a Tom Cruise movie.  (I'm just kidding all you Tom Cruise fans).

Elwood

PS I think you all can see if I'm up or down today. Cool

At first I get pissed because I know it is going to be the normal depiction - Bipolar kills someone  or kills self. But I do watch for accuracy. if it is something that is totally inaccurate I get pissed. But if it is something that is an accurate depiction, I would be happy.

When I wrote earlier I meant to complement  ~*~Chelbie~*~  on posting in the “Poll” section.  I could never think of a good question to get anybody interested in taking the poll and make comments.

The other reason I’m writing again is that Phyllis got me thinking.  Have I have seen a good movie or TV show that does treat the subject accurately?  I mentioned that my memory is bad which means I don’t remember.  Let me know if anyone can think of one.

Thanks
Elwood

Exactly, (and thank you Elwood) Cheesy  I actually can never think of questions to ask either, but this one came to my mind because I was watching Law and Order and they have had SEVERAL depictions on their shows (even though I LOVE the show) about how Bp's are either suicidal, psycho, neurotic, psychotic (okay, which some people are, some aren't) but they show it that way ALL THE TIME on the show.  At least THAT show.  And it's frustrating to me and that's why I asked the question because I wanted to know if I was the only one that it pissed off ...lol  I've never really turned the channel because of THAT, but I HAVE turned th channel for instance if a movie, show, or what-have-you had someone DIE because of committing suicide due to a "mental disease"...only because of me trying to commit suicide a few times, in the in past, I still have never worked out those issues.  Haven't found the right therapist to talk to about these things.  Like I said, the last one, all she wanted to do was talk about HER problems that she was having with other patients!!! I felt like I was HER therapist!!!

One movie, that I mentioned to Ramji, was now I know how the person in the movie feels is..."WHAT ABOUT BOB?"...

Did everyone see that movie? Richard Dreyfus and Bill Murray???

I feel SO much like "Bob"....how he wanted to see his pdoc and his pdoc only and wouldn't see anyone else and followed him on his vacation and stuff and called him constantly......

When I first saw that movie years ago, I laughed....but now, when I think of it....I'm sort of like it.  I mean, not to the full extent of "Bob"...but....to the point where I want to talk to my pdoc only about my meds...and want to see him ASAP...and "when's he going to be back"? ...calling several times a day to try and get an answer to something....

I just may have to watch that movie again...

But as for any shows showing a CORRECT depiction of Bp, I just have NEVER seen it...and when I say correct, I mean showing (as my little avatar says) "the good, the bad and the bipolar".....they usually just show the "bad" side of the Bipolar....

Keep responding guys!!! This is great!!! (AND THANKS FOR DOING SO!!!)

Chelbie, to me there is a good side to BiPolar. I do not wish to be someone else, even though the bad does get really bad, and most of the time things are not too good. I would never change the depth of my feelings even though they most times cause harm to myself and to others. The fact is and what I'm trying to say is, the emotions that I so deeply feel, others never get to feel. I love so much deeper. People don't have that kind of love. I know things about others just by talking to them that most people don't see because they are just too busy with their lives to listen to them, or maybe they are just too self-centered. When others hurt, I hurt with them. It's like I can actually feel their pain. There are other emotions that I have, I could go on and on, but I'm sure you probably know what I mean because it's the only good thing that I see that comes from BP, and you do acknowledge that there is good. Boy, the bad surely is bad though!

Unfortunately, depictions of most things on TV are exaggerations. As someone that works with computers and writes software, I always have a difficult time watching television shows or movies that try to depict people using computers or writing programs while still trying to make the plot interesting. I can appreciate, though, that they're working with a subject that is largely internalized: it's mind-numbingly boring to the casual observer but can be exciting for the person that's actually doing the work and visualizing the problem.

Mental illness is another of those subjects that gets exaggerated. As with anything the average viewer may have little or no experience with, the writers will exaggerate the most stereo-typical aspects of a subject to make it something that's familiar to the average viewer. The average viewers will always outnumber the experienced viewers, so they don't really have to worry about alienating people with real life experience if it means are larger share of average, inexperienced viewers.

My own cynical viewpoint is that the writers have a pretty low opinion of their audience if they think topics need to be made blindingly obvious to the average viewer. Subtlety is dead, I suppose.

"Mental illness is another of those subjects that gets exaggerated.".....I don't think you could exaggerate the hell I've been through. There is no way that anyone could depict it to be worse. Different maybe, but not worse.

It's interesting because we were just watching a show (and I'll be damned if I remember it now and it was just yesterday!) that had something about someone having Bipolar and going on a killing spree or something.

It might have been CSI Las Vegas.

Anyway, it just amazes me because I know that there can be alot of different sides of Bipolar, but it seems like they ONLY show the bad side of it...and it's so annoying.  And yes, I get emotional over it and I begin to cry.

I wonder if there has ever been a documentary done on Bipolar on any of the educational channels?

Over here we had "The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive" presented by Stephen Fry. It was ok, you can see it on Youtube if you are interested.
