I had Elavil once, for two days. Those two days were wonderful. Unfortunatly just before this I was on Paxil alone. I didn't know I was bipolar at the time and the Paxil made me start having very strong symptoms of it. I was taken off the Paxil abruptly and then put on the Elavil til I could get in to see a real pdoc. For the first two days the Elavil made me the calmest I'd ever felt in my life. But then unfortunatly on the second night I crashed, became severely manic for a few hours, and then severely depressed. In this depression I decided to take another Elavil to make me sleep, a few hours sooner than I was supposed to. This was seen as a suicide attempt by my then boyfriend (I actually wasn't trying to kill myself). I went into the hospital, and so on. I'd love to try the Elavil again, but this time with other meds like lithium to help keep things in balance. My old pdoc would not prescribe it because of what happened before I went into the hospital. I'm going to a new pdoc and hoping I can try again. Anyone have any advice? Anyone tried Elavil with success? With failure?

Yeah, unfortunately, Paxil is an antidepressant which can send mania over the top of the mountain.

I have tried Elavil, but it was also before I knew I was BiPolar. It did relax me, as it is a muscle relaxer and did help me to fall asleep. I don't really know anyone I don't think that takes it with BiPolar meds, so I'm just don't have much info about that.

That doesn't sound like a suicide attempt to me. I'm sure your new pdoc can prescribe you something that will relax you like Elavil did, even if it isn't Elavil. Don't worry. When do you get to see the pdoc?

Elavil is an old, seldom prescribed tricyclic anti-depressant. In some countries it is used to prevent migraines. Sometimes also for insomnia.

If you like it, by all means, try to get some. Most people don't like their meds. Personally, I wouldnt go near an anti-depressant, but that's my case. It sucks that when you say you werent trying to commit suicide, people dont believe you--talk about invalidation! There's invalidation over other things, too. Whatever became of civil rights for crazies?
Sounds like maybe you're in the UK?

Nope, USA here. Even when I got to the psych ward they still didn't believe me. My "friends" that had dropped me off at the emergency room told them I took seven of those pills. I tried to tell the docs if I had taken seven than there would be eight pills missing from the bottle they had in their hand, but there wasn't. Only two pills missing. And they still didn't believe me. So I told them I understand meds enough to know that I'd have to take that whole bottle if I wanted to off myself. Well I guess they didn't like that very much and so they tried to physically force a shot of something on me to calm me down. When I made a big enough scene to stop them they decided I would sit out on the gurney in the hallway the rest of the night. The whole time I was at the psych ward the doc was trying to convince me that I really had intended to kill myself, and that I was just in denial. Geeeezzz.....

Elavil can be dangerous but it is rarely prescribed anymore.  It was in vogue about 25 years ago.  The problem was that most people were like me and could not function while taking it.  I would sleep for 18 hours then I would get completely out of control and no one could understand why.  They did not understand the link between AD's and bipolar then.  Plus for me I was not diagnosed until 11 years later.  Anyway, not one of my favorites.  Definetly in the "does not tolerate well" category.

About 30 years ago my Dr decided to try elavil and take me off prosac.  The first day I took Elavil I felt like my arms were to heavy to lift.  I also felt like my brain was asleep and that I was drooling.

Not a very good picture!  It made a very big impression on me and I am glad an urgent call to my Dr resulted in stopping Elavil.

Not all drugs act the same on different people.  I hope it works for you.

I took elavil for years ..... worked for me, but I was in denial about my mental health and quit taking it.  Years later I crashed.
