I've been kind of ignoring the abilify--dont see why I need it--what is it supposed to do, anyhow?

Well... It is an anti-psychotic. They also use it in conjunction with anti-depressants to help with depression. Don't ask me how it works, because I couldn't tell ya.
From abilify.com - ABILIFY is indicated for:
* Use as an add-on treatment to antidepressants for Major Depressive Disorder in adults * Treatment of manic and mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder in adults and in pediatric patients 10 to 17 years of age * Treatment of Schizophrenia in adults and in adolescents 13 to 17 years of age

If its an anti-psychotic it probably inhibits the production of dopamine in the brain--dopamine is the "go out and get it" drug. That's all I know about that.

I tried Abilify for about two months. I didn't notice any difference so my pdoc finally took me off of it.

I've been on it for about 7-8 months, and had to go to hospital whilst on it so I'm thinking it doesn't work too well for me. Getting much better results from Lithium. As soon as my levels are stable I'm hoping to come off the Abilify. You're also on Lithium, are you not, Clayton?

Yes, I do take lithium, and seroquel also, which is another anti-psychotic--why not just hit yourself over the head with a hammer?

I didn't have a positive reaction to Abilify either. I don't see the need for two anti-psychotics as well, although I have taken two at once, Geodon and Seroquel. I think I was under that treatment for pure sedation because I was in a harmful position. I am still on the Geodon, but have a hard time getting to sleep without the Seroquel. I did notice that with the Seroquel, I seem to become immune to it and needed more and more, which created more and more sedation.
Clayton, I've been questioning my meds also. I'm wondering if I just wean myself off of everything except the Cymbalta if I would be okay. The only real problem I seem to be having lately is depression and I feel that maybe I only need an antidepressant, the Cymbalta. The problem with this for me is the withdrawal that I go through when weaning off of these meds. I normally find myself starting the med again because I just can't handle the withdrawal.

High, I have been taking these meds for 18 years--not the abilify--that's new, but if I quit I dont know what I would do with myself at med times! I guess a bunch of drugs is a badge of being a really crazy person, which is part of my identity. I think if these docs had to take five different drugs 3x a day they would not be so anxious to make others do it. Stuff doesnt stop episodes anyhow, so--

i wanted to elaborate on my answer..... if i take a small dosage of abilify such as 5 or 10 mg i start to hallucinate quiet badly and get very paranoid, scared, miserable(more so than usual). if my dosage is upped to 15mg or more i start to overdose and get uncontrollable shaking, sweating, vomiting, blurred vision, inability to concentrate etc....practically all the side effects that they mention on the pack. so for me i really dont know why they dont give me something else instead and none of the dosages suit me for any length of time.....three weeks seems to be a maximum

I have been on Abilify for several months now. 30mg. every morning. It seems to help and I have no adverse reactions to it like Nordiniki does. (Sorry about that niki.) Of course I take that in conjunction with the other meds. Feel free to ask me questions. I've been in treatment for several years.

I think perhaps it is an "all purpose" type drug. Technically it is an a-typical anti-psychotic... However, it is used in conjunction with some anti-depressants as a mood stabilizer. I think that is how it works if I remember correctly...
