Does anyone know if it is safe to use melatonin in conjunction with our meds?

My son takes it, he's 11, and it is working well with his sleeping habits. I just wondered if it might work for me, but am afraid to try until I talk to my doc.

It works fine with the meds.
My Pdoc actually told me to use it. I did use it for a while but then just like everything else, it stopped working.  Undecided

I take melatonin every day and while I'm not on any other medications, it's safe no matter what you're taking. It's a chemical already produced by your brain, supplementing just helps you get more in the event you're not getting enough (which is very likely if you're already taking medications that mess with brain chemistry).

It's practically impossible to overdose on melatonin. Typical dosages are 3mg and 5mg tablets; I read a study where newborn (less than a week old) babies were given 25mg doses to see if it might help with some sort of brain trauma suffered in the womb (some kind of poisoning, I think maybe mercury poisoning). Not only did the melatonin help to offset the trauma (didn't cure, but definitely had an impact over doing nothing), not a single baby overdosed on what is basically a 5-8x dose for a full-grown adult.

I get the 3mg tablets and take 3 before bed. I've had problems waking up about 3 hours after going to bed, but I don't think this is normal for most people that take melatonin. I don't take it for sleep problems, but more to offset the lack of sun affecting my mood (also take a vitamin D supplement and a multi-vitamin in the morning).

Melatonin is also supposed to be useful in offsetting damage caused by some of the things in our modern diet that affect brain function, like MSG and fluoride.

I tried it last night. I took it at about 9pm after waking from a 2-3hr. nap and also had a nap yesterday morning for about 2 hrs. I hadn't slept at all the night before last. It's hard to tell if there were any results because of all of that, but it's 4am now and I'm awake. I'm going to try my best to stay up all day today and then try it tonight. The upcoming holidays are wearing me out. I'm done buying gifts and now comes the cooking lol. My kids started on me 2 days ago about making sausage balls and peanut butter balls, so we've been making candy for the last couple of days. I absolutley do not like cooking. I used to and they remember how it used to be, and want it to be the way it used to be, so I'm trying so hard to please everyone around here.

Anyway, everyone keep your fingers crossed that the melatonin will help me. My seroquel has stopped working at 100mg and I'll be damned it I take more than that. I take enough of shit already and I want to stop. It sounds like, from Brian's post, that it would be beneficial in many ways for me to take the melatonin. The seroquel only makes me feel lethargic for at least 24 hrs. after taking it, but yet there is no sleep provided anymore. It sounds to me like taking the melatonin could give me some advantages instead of the disadvantages that come with seroquel. I hate these damn meds so much. There's side effects to every damn one of them.

I took 6mg...my son takes 3 and the doc said I could raise him to 6, so I thought I'd start off at 6.
