Hello, I'm new here and what brought me on to this forum is I have recently made a close friend with someone who is bipolar. He seems to know when things are going to happen but I am just concerned at how someone can help or what there is to expect if you are in a relationship with someone who is bipolar. I really like this guy and know and have done research about bipolar to educate myself. I have epilepsy and know that going on these websites to chat helps alot if you can give any tips, websites to suggest or any helpful information please post it in reply. Right now I'm just being as supportive to him as I can.  Help

Hi littleharp, it sounds to me like so far you're doing everything right, educating yourself about the illness and being as supportive as you can is exactly what we need from our friends and partners.

As to other websites, this is the nicest community I've found and there is a whole section for Friends and Family, which has some useful tips posted, as well as the rest of the board for you to use. There are some good sites such as www.mdf.org.uk for basic information but it sounds like you have gone a bit beyond that, there are many books on the subject including a couple by bpbabble members, Jane ("The Rookie's Guide to Bipolar Disorder" and "Sugar & Salt") and Clayton ("Meds and Reds") which might be worth checking out if you can.

Welcome to the boards,

Cathy :-)

As Cathy said, you seem to be doing everything right so far - support and education. We really need understanding as we ourselves don't even understand what is going on with us at times. It is very difficult to be in a relationship with someone who has BP. Do you know if he is BP I or BP II?
I had a really good book on BiPolar but over our last move I lost it and I can't remember the name of it. Other places to go are support groups on myspace or on facebook. There are some really good ones out there... And of course here. Smiley

All you really can do is be supportive and learn all you can.
