its never been a problem before but as of today Ive been having lots of little tremors all day...i know one of the side effects of lithium is tremors...but why now? Ive been on it for 3 months! its really annoying  when your trying to keep a steady hand when you paint.

Has anyone else had tremors from lithium? is it normal to happen after a while being on it? im worried (lithium is working really well, i dont wanna come off it)

I can't speak about Lithium as I have never been on it. However, side affects can happen ANY time. Even if you have been on something for years. I dunno why, but it has something to do with your body chemistry.

i suffer with the tremors and have done for a long time.....your right it does make thing difficult to do at times...drinking is always a funny one with me but it can get annoying.
although i have to say my tremors started before i was on lithium....i think mine are caused by abilify as i have been on that drug for the longest.
do you take any other drugs?maybe it is a combination of them that has given you the tremors.
as phyllis said sometimes side effects dont pop up straight away.you could always try explaining it to you doctor as maybe they can help with it if it gets as bad as mine does sometimes.......have a read of the leaflet that comes with lithium....i dont think i recall tremors being a side effect

There is no sure fire test to tell what the source of your tremors are. Even the list of side affects for a certain drug means that this particular drug may not be the source. Because of each person's unique individual chemistry, we have differant side affects...same drug other people have none. Reasearch & science are churning out new drugs. It is said a new anti-depressive, will shortly, be on the market...that does not have the side affect of weight gain. So it's your call...if the side affect of a drug vs it's effectiveness...is worth it. All p/docs are not created equal in the mastery of prescribing drugs. There is a good selection of drugs that my help you...with limited or no side affects. Sadly we are the guinea pigs...in the Russian roulette of the med game. If meds don't do the job...there are alternative treatments. Good luck in your quest...Joe Buck (Bob)

What I know about Lithium:
I've been on lithium since 2005.   I can point to lithium for several bothersome side effects but no other med seems to work.  The main reason for side effects with this med is that the amount that it takes to work is really close or just at the beginning of toxic range.  Lithium levels in your blood is a balancing act.  Increasing you water intake or increasing your salt/sodium intake reduces the level of Lithium in your blood.  This is because Lithium is itself a salt and reacts to sodium in our bodies.  On the other hand, decreasing your water intake (especially if you get dehydrated) lowering your salt intake, vomiting, diarrhea, or consuming alcohol, NSAIDS such as ibuprofen increases the amount of Lithium in your blood and could make you toxic.  If your tremors become more noticeable, gait abnormality, slurred speech, vomiting or blurred vision, you've probably entered the toxic range and should get medical help right away.  Your doctors' response might be to lower your dose a little for minor tremors or take you off it completely if you become toxic.   You should get your lithium levels checked on a regular basis (normal range: 0.6 to 1.2 mEq/l; manic range: 1.0 and 1.5 mEq/l).  Also it's a good idea to have your thyroid checked periodically.

Here is more info on Lithium if you're interested: http://www.healthyplace.com/other-info/psychiatric-medications/lithium-carbonate-full-prescribing-information/menu-id-72/

I took Lithium for about 6 months. It seemed to work well at first and then as every month passed, the tremors set in worse and worse as the dosage got higher and higher. Eventually it was discontinued because I was having daily brain damaging sezures. I don't mean to scare you, just telling you my story. Lithium is a wonder drug for many people, but for me it could've costed me my life.

I've got the same problem - went up to 700mg from 600mg and within a week the tremors were so bad I couldn't play my Bass guitar properly, so I understand your frustration with painting. Dr has taken it back down to 600mg but it hasn't improved much yet, I'm guessing it takes a few days for the level to settle down?

Have you seen your Dr yet Darkmotive? Please let us know what s/he says.

I've felt like that a few times before going on meds, I always chalked it up to the nervous system.  But I think that could well be a part of mania or hypomania--heightened senses and all.  Of course the last few times, was too busy seeing in 4D to notice. :-/

I've been on it for a week and I'm getting them a little bit in my hands.  I read somewhere that if you take a good quality fish oil (like Carlson's Fish Oil) it will help w/ the tremors.
