I would try taking psilocybin with a good therapist to talk to about my deeper issues during the trip.  Psilocybin doesn't amp me like LSD does so I don't think it would make me manic.

 I think shrooms would be better because they are natural...LSD is a recipe anyone could tweak, you know?
