Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has been by husband Michael Douglas's side during his cancer fight, has sought mental health treatment for herself, her rep says.

"After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder," the rep says in a statement. "She's feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films."

Zeta-Jones, 41, spent about five days in the unidentified facility, a friend tells PEOPLE.

Bipolar disorder, a mental illness marked by elevated or irritable moods alternating with periods of depression, afflicts about 6 million Americans. Those with Bipolar II tend to have more depression, with the mood swings spread over a longer time and the "up" periods less elevated. The episodes can be triggered by major stress or life changes.

"There's no question it's been a stressful year," the friend says. "Catherine has had deal with Michael's illness and that's been hard. She went in for a few days because she's about to start working, and wanted to make sure she's in top form, which she is."

Douglas, 66, announced in January he was declared free of cancer after what he called a "wild six-month ride" of chemotherapy and radiation for a tumor on his tongue.

"The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired," Zeta-Jones told PEOPLE last year when Douglas was in the midst of his cancer battle.

She said Douglas told their children Dylan, 10, and Carys, 7, the difficult news himself: "Daddy sat them down and told them he has cancer now."

I'm BP2 and the only thing that ruffled my feathers is where they say that BP2 - the impact on daily life is not so severe. I think a few of you would agree when I say that when you are down, you can get pretty far down and it definitely makes a negative impact on your daily life. Just as mania for BP 1 can really impact your life. Either form really have an impact on life. I realize they are just trying to describe the difference between the two, so I'm not too bent out of shape, but people need to realize that depression is just as bad as mania. I don't know if I am making my point very well... but I think you guys know what I mean.  Undecided

Perfectly made in my opinion Smiley

I have to admit I did get a little annoyed with for that 'not so severe' point myself and the reason for that is every individual is different, we cope with things differently.  So pretty much one persons depression could be viewed as mild in one persons eyes but be crippling to another.  Hell I've read posts on here describing depression that make me step back and wonder how I'd cope!

I guess it is hard for someone to label the differences though, I should have thought about that before getting annoyed Sad

Its very misleading...yeah hypomania isn't as bad as mania but the depression in BP2 usually is longer lasting and is just as bad as depression in bipolar1.  WTF?  I hate misinformation. Angry

 Huh?

i'm confused. i know you just said what you disagreed with, but could you elaborate on that? i didn't find that misleading. but you and i do not have the same bp type so maybe that is where my confusion lies. i'm not trying to piss you off. i told myself that i was going to take a break from the board because i didn't feel like i was articulating my thoughts very well. everything just seems to come out wrong. Sad

What I meant by misleading was that the article makes an assumption that because BP2 has less severe mania aka hypo...that the depression is less severe as well.  While they don't say that, one could draw that conclusion with the less impact of life remark.  Its BS.  I think it even said mood swings were less severe w/ BP2.  With severe depression that occurs in BP2, that's bullshit!  I was agreeing ith you!   Tongue
