Okay, so if you saw my post last night in the general discussion this will probably make a little more sense but I'm wondering if I could get some feedback on safe mood stabilizing medications. I am going to my doctor today and we want lots of information about what I could try.

i don't know that there is an answer for this... all medications have side affects. but just because they have side affects doesn't mean that you will be hurt by them.

All meds have some side effects, some people are more sensitive than others. You can google a "mood stabilizers" and read about all of them.

Lithium is what they call the "gold standard" and it does work. It can cause tremor in your hands, excessive thirst, clumsiness, spaciness.

The anti-convulsants are the others.......Depakote, Tegretol, Lamictal, Neurontin,Topamax. They have some of the same side effects as Lithium.

If you go to about.com they have a great section on Bipolar and meds.

Some people take Lithium and do very well on it. I started on it and it really did save my life, but after a few years the side effects were just too much for me, but I was also taking Depakote with it because my moods were very unstable at the time. The combo of those 2 + antipsychotic meds was just too much for my body, the side effects from all of them were making me physically ill. I had to get off of them and I cleaned myself out and I changed mood stabilizers. That can happen, many people try all different combos till they get it right.

Don't worry about taking meds, sometimes they are very necessary! But after living with this illness for awhile and learning how to manage & cope, you may eventually be able to take very low doses of meds. You will get there eventually.  Smiley

Right now you need to feel better and live. Research Lithium and anti-convulsants, and talk to the Doc.

Technically it's an anti-psychotic, but I've had 2 doctors use Abilify as a mood stabilizer.  It seems to work fairly well.  I still have ups and downs, but not as severe.

Have any of you been on tegretol? My husband was researching that one today and saw some great information about it and it seems to sound like the safest. Thanks for all the help.

Do you think lithium is a safe one to start at? I have heard so many mixed things.

Lamotrigine (Lamictal) seems to work fairly well for me. So far no discernable side effects at all, which is wonderful to me after gaining a heap of weight and being sleepy while I was on Seroquel. Seems to be different for everyone though, some may not respond to it. Also you are asking for safe, the big concern with lamotrigine is the rash which can be very dangerous. From what I have read though there is only a very minor risk, especially if you increase the dose very slowly at first.
