Does anybody have any tips on combating the side-effects of lithium? I have only been on it for about a few days but I'm getting extreme nausea. I feel so miserable. I was a little unsure of whether it was the lithium or just withdrawling symptoms from the other meds but I fear it is the lithium. From what I read it does seem to be a common side-effect but just wondering if you guys have any tips on combating it? It's my birthday today and I just feel like laying in bed not moving because of it.

i've never had a problem with lithium... at least none that i'm aware of... i take my lithium with a meal as i was instructed... maybe that's why i've never had nausea... do you take it with a meal?

Thanks!

Yes, I always do. I was told to. It could still be withdrawing symptoms, I just have no way to know for sure.

Lithium only really bothers me when my blood level is 1.4, mostly I get really uncoordinated , have semi-diarrhea (sorry) and doped.  I think it suppresses my appetite now at a slightly lower dose.  In the past I took a drug called tramadol for pain and it made me puke only on lithium.  It also made me manic so no more of that.  Now I don't get sick unless I take tylenol3 and I just drink ginger tea or ale with real ginger.  If you're having withdrawels from another med maybe back down slower.  I had to come cold turkey off of lamictal, UGH my shell was stripped away and I had a freak-out at Busch Gardens, that sucked.

Just an update, my husband called the pharmacist for me and she said that it's VERY common to have nausea for the first week or so on lithium. She said the best way to combat this is to make sure I am drinking lots and lots of fluids. She said since it is a salt, you need a lot of extra water to combat dehydration which in turn causes nausea. She also said to try to take it further apart. 12 hours would be best but that's hard to get two doses in in a day 12 hours apart. So I am going to attempt to get myself out of a bed a little earlier to eat and get my first dose in the morning. And then take the second one later on in the evening. I hope this helps.

Yes, make sure you drink lots of water. I never got nausea from Lithium, but it made me sick after awhile in other ways.

   Happy Birthday!!!! cheer

I don't know how much you're taking but I have to split mine into 3x per day.  Otherwise blah!  But yeah drink lots of water and hopefully you can get through the first week.

I take 300mg twice a day. The doctor told me to make sure I take it with food but never specified how hard apart doses should be. So I was taking it at 11 and 5. Well when we talked to the pharmacist she said the further apart the better. So I now have to try to force myself to get up earlier to eat breakfast and take my pill and then eat later in the day, which I hate. I don't like eating so close to bedtime.

It won't matter if you take it sooner, eating real late sucks!
