So I'm having a little debate with my boyfriend over whether I'm fit to drive or not. I'm just curious about how many of you drive, whether it's in the city or just in small towns/country, and if not, why you'd recommend that people with bipolar should not drive.  I say we're fine as long as we're not in a bad emotional state.  Grin

I drive in town. The farthest I will go is to the grocery store which is located over by the interstate. I will not go out of town and I do not drive at night.

That's what I'm thinking about if I get my license and I don't think it'd be a good idea for me to go out of town, but around town seems okay?

I drive everywhere .... no problems.
Even when I was having ECT I drove, except on the days I had a treatment.

I LOVE to drive! Especially sporty manual transmission cars. Cool

However, driving whilst manic is not a good thing, I have been quite reckless in the past when driving alone. I don't drive with anyone else in the car, DJ drives us around.

And meds can impair your judgment in a BIG way. You have to be very cautious.

I've done it a few times for practice and it's really fun. Smiley Just for me I don't think I'd drive in cities, and like you said I'd have to be cautious. I don't think I'd drive alone unless I had to. lol  When you said meds impair your judgment do you mean all the time? Cause I've noticed that my memory is really starting to go downhill and I can't focus on reading, etc any more.

I don't drive and don't have a license. This is mostly due to my anxiety though. I had my beginner's years and years ago but dreaded driving and did it very little when trying to learn. After it expired I never went back to get it again. Well I now can't even sit behind the wheel without going into a full blown panic attack. My husband was having a dental procedure done a few weeks ago and wasn't sure if he could drive home afterward and I got all cocky saying "I can drive you home", even though I don't have a license but I guess that was just my inflated self coming through. He said "okay, well if you think so, drive around this cul-de-sac." Within seconds of getting behind the wheel I panicked, started crying and said I can't do this over and over. So yeah, it's not going to happen. Even thinking about getting behind the wheel now causes my anxiety to shoot way up.

I drive everywhere and I havent had any problems.  I live in a medium sized city.  The only problems I would think with us driving is being manic or wanting to commit suiside.

I've never thought of driving as a problem. I've driven in super rural areas and cities as big as Boston. I do have anxiety when I drive though. Not always but I really don't like people I know to drive behind me because I'm afraid they are judging my driving. I also don't like to drive with people I don't know in the car. I guess if I think about it there are 2 problems. First is when I'm hypo I tend to drive faster and maybe a bit more reckless.(I usually drive pike a granny so my version of reckless might be off) Second, when I'm really depressed one of my frequent thoughts/ urges is to drive off the road.

I drive anywhere - I think it is probably a pretty personal thing though and will differ from person to person. The diagnosis of bipolar definitely should not stop anyone driving in my opionion, but in certain situations or cycles it is best not to.

I have been a completely reckless maniac before in a car.  I shouldn't when I'm manic because I want to speed and stuff...I don't have a car so sometimes people don't want me to drive theirs.  Other than that its not a problem.  Amazingly I have never been in an accident when I was driving, nor have I been pulled over.  I used to go 115 mph on the interstate because I had super fast reflexes and reactions and had ESP especially for cops.  I really that is slightly psychotic.  I even ran off the road once and recovered and thought I was an amazing driver for that hahaha.  Last few manic episodes being aware of that past craziness I did try to curb my driving (no pun intended) as much as I could.  I had a near accident (dumbass in front of me slammed on the brakes to make a turn and I was thinking about all kinds of shit not all there so barely stopped.  I drove into somebody's back yard because I was confused at where the fuck I was at.  I squeazed through between a tree and the house with 2 inches on each side I swear.  I realize that is fucking wacked out that I got that lost in my mind.  So yeah maybe not when manic is best haha.   Grin

I will answer this one because it effects me a lot. Having the mix of Bipolar I and Aspergers Syndrome driving is still possible. I took the classes at age 19 because it terrified me. I got an A in the class, I memorized the manual, took the written test (got all but one of the questions right). However, the driving portion I failed. I was so nervous I did stupid stuff and failed. Driving is very stressful and physically makes me ill if I am not medicated on Ativan. The last time I drove was 2 and a half years ago. I firmly am against driving under the influence or riding with someone under the influence (a friend who uses marijuana for ADHD has been the only acception to this rule). I live in a city with a great bus service and hope to move to an even larger city when I get my degree. You don't have to drive to live.

i drive rather cautiously and when im in a car with someone who is driving it doesnt matter how fast they go or how reckless they are its never good enough people suck at driving and others around me on the road make me really really nervous i almost panic sometimes and then if i get real bad it will make me hallucinate so if i drive the radio is loud and im smokin.. my heart races really hard when im a passenger and i chain smoke ciggs if i cant smoke in the car the music best be loud as hell otherwise i start to freak out and the minute i get out it kinda calms my nerves
long drives make me feel like im trapped i hate to stuck in a car sometimes when im a passenger i like to stop here and there in order to breath
the longer im in there the more i push my head into hands to stop the feeling that im in there
