Ok, there are so many mixed reviews on this subject, I just wanted to hear the more experienced bipolar's opinion.  I've smoked since the age of 15 i'm 28 now.  Had a crazy long manic episode followed my this extremely horrid depression that I can't break from for 7 months now.  I was supposed to see my Pdoc today but she ended up having jury duty.  Currently i'm only on 5mg of saphris, which is helping a bit with hallucinations but not so much with mood. I mean this is the lowest of the low for me.  Today, I  said screw it and turned to a my trusty friend Ganga.  I'm bipolar 1 with psychotic features.  I know its advised by many that I don't partake.  But in all honesty, I feel better now than I have in months.  I worry it could worsen things, but in the same respect the slew of meds they had me on didn't help at all.   So, I made the decision to add this into my regime.  I do plan on still going on conventional medicine but, nowhere near as much.  Are there others that share my same view point? I just feel so much more "human" when I medicate I guess, and the suicidal thoughts are currently nowhere to be found.  So, right now i'm happy to say that i'm back to sweet sweet indica.  Hopefully, it doesn't worsen things.

i totally support your use of weed... too bad you're on anti-psychotic or i'd recommend you try an eighth of mushrooms... shrooms under the right setting with the right intentions could lift your depression for weeks on end... anti-psychotics cancel out/prevent it from ever happening unfortunately...

did you have these suicidal thoughts before you started saphris? just curious because that med is notorious for causing suicidal ideation as well as people have actually took their own lives while on it...

anyway, yes, i vote yes... smoke the holy herb...

many off us here partake. although, i haven't smoked in a few years.  Undecided still, none of us are doctors here, so we can not tell you either way if it is good or bad for you. The one bad thing about smoking weed is that it kills your short term memory (at least it did mine). However, so does all those other medications that the pdoc's put us on.  Puke

I vote yes if it helps...just don't abuse it, only use it for medicinal purposes, smallest dose needed.  Be mindful of the strain you re using, some strain are better than other for certain things...maybe keep a log.

Thanks for the reply's and yeah it does seem to be helping a great deal I actually woke up in the morning.  Kensho, I had suicidal thoughts before the Saphris.  Although, it doesn't seem to be helping any.  Is it possible to manage bipolar 1 without an antipsychotic?  It seems none of them really help. I wanna say I read somewhere that Paz doesn't use one?  Thanks again guys.

Paz only uses one for when she has a major freakout...I have BP1  too and only take one in an emergency like she does or know I'm headed there.  Other than that is lithium for me and healthy diet and exercise...and stress management.

I have been smoking weed for 20+ years [yes, I am OLD!]  And I find it is truly the only thing thing that helps me everytime I partake. If I feel sick Puke
it makes the nausea go away, if I am in pain, it helps my pain, if I am upset and amped up it calms me down. It is medicine!  Roll Joint

And yes, I take zyprexa when needed, only very occasionally......so far this year I have had take it only a handful of times. I  only use it for major freakouts w/psychosis [I am Bipolar 1 w/psychotic features]

I take a very small dose of mood stabilizer, and valium as needed [and that is not very often!]

Ganga is the best medicine, IMO. And healthy lifestyle is key.
