The topic about friends [trainwreck] made me think of the things that I do since I don't really hang out with my friends anymore. I guess moving here to Costa Rica really isolated me from them, but whatever!

Anyway, I am a voracious reader [always have been] I read stuff on the internet [ BPBabble, news, wiki, blogs, etc] I also read magazines...Vanity Fair is my fave, I try to read it every month. I also like Real Simple, & sometimes Town & Country, Elle & Vogue, depending if I can find them and if the cover interests me. I also love books.....I was bummed that I couldn't bring a lot of books here to CR when we moved [they are heavy & expensive to ship] so I am in the process of finding more books here to read. I go to a second hand Bookshop that has English & French books, and there is a small cafe in town run by Gringos & they have a library that works on the honor system.

 I like to read Biographies, Mysteries and History, Novels & Fiction. I love Agatha Christie, I never tire of reading her, I also like Dick Francis, Martha Grimes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle [Sherlock Holmes] Edgar Allen Poe, Dominick Dunne, John Irving, Hemingway, F.Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Dickens. Poetry by Dorothy Parker, Walt Whitman, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Emily Dickinson. I also like Popular Novels, stuff that makes bestseller lists. And I have read all of the books Gloria Vanderbilt has written about her life, and books about the old guard Society in New York & The Eastern Establishment {I was born and raised In NY, that stuff interests me, I was brought up around it}

Are any of you bookworms like I am? What do you like to read?

Once upon a time I was an avid reader. Very much into Stephen King and VC Andrews. Then I had Devinn and started working full time and didn't really have time to read. The desire kind of left me.

I do pick up a book from time to time and it is either boring and I don't have the attention span for it or I love it and I can not put it down. I Love to read magazines though! I have a subscription to Good Housekeeping I love the tips they have in them. I also subscribe to Healthy Eating to get some ideas on some new healthy recipes. My mom gifted me the magazine that the Turner Classic Movie Channel puts out.... I haven't received it yet, but am looking forward to it. I love my Rolling Stone!

I did get a new library card in December in hopes that I could start to pick up reading again. I'd like to read a Bill Mahr book - he is such a sarcastic ass! Smiley
I did a lot of reading on Arthurian Legend, and stuff on the Celts, and different books on different religions. That type of stuff intrigues me too...

I used to read a whole lot, but I've lost the attention span for it. My house is full of books, I read anything from parapsychology to History to gardening on those rare occasions that I can read. Smiley Even though I seem to be slowly losing that ability. :/

I like Stephen King, especially Tommyknockers. Smiley

I used to read all the time. When I was a child and up through my teens I always had a book in my hand. Then I went through college and didn't have time to read for pleasure. Once I graduated I was already well into my first battle with depression and since then I've found it very difficult to focus on reading. I have a very hard time finding books that keep my interest. Every now and then I will find a good one and I'll read it in a day or two. My favorite books are mostly kids books because that's when I read most. Absolutely love To Kill A Mocking Bird, the Giver, The Hiding Place, the Odyssey. I do enjoy browsing through articles on the internet though. Mostly hobby related or medical journals. Honestly I wish I could read more often. I miss the times when a book would hold my interest and I couldn't put it down.

There are times when my attention span is seriously lacking......at those times I find it impossible to focus on anything [thanks, ADD! Angry]
Reading is one of those things. It is very frustrating, but when my attention is better, I start out by reading a magazine, and then I slowly work my way up to a book. This can take some time.....but I am always glad when I can focus on a good story, it takes me out of my own self for awhile and sometimes it is just the escape that I need. When I mood swing it is next to impossible.....I'm too keyed up when manic, and too depressed to care when I swing down.
Reading is a great escape from the reality that is Manic-Depression.

I have that book......and it's a first edition! It is packed up and at my Mum-in-Laws house at present.

It's a great book, but VERY sad. You need to be in the right headspace when you read it, IMO.

interesting thread Paz... i love to read, even though i'm dyslexic to a pretty significant degree and i've got something's i'd like to share with you, that you might enjoy...  the first is a reading program my wife and i just discovered and ordered two days ago called ZoxPro...  this is an incredibly unique reading program in that it is increasing the reading speed and comprehension levels in people up to 25,000 words per minute and near 100% reading comprehension results!!!  the creator of the program is saying we were all born with the innate ability to fully develop a complete photographic memory... and on top of these reading skill improvements every single user claims steep improvements in self confidence, the ability to become completely motivated when you desire to do something and it gets rid of anxiety among many other psychological improvements by linking the subconscious and the upper conscious mind more completely... all most every user reports things like colors look more vibrant then ever and sounds take on deeper, richer tones... the vast majority of people are claiming they have had significant improvements in cognition... interestingly all of the things some people report while tripping... this program definitely achieves every goal those who practice mindfulness work for...

i've spent many days looking into this before we decided top act on a full money back guarantee and i'm stunned at the results everyone is reporting...  there are multiple dozens of Utube videos on it and they were all positive... i even did a search on Utube called ZoxPro sucks and at first grew concerned because a ton of videos popped up but as i watched each one they were actually praising the program... i was like what the fuck but it's similar the one of my favorite bands hard core fans do in lines waiting to get in at concerts...  it's the band Primus and all of the fans just screaming Primus Sucks!!! for up to an hour before the doors are open for admission!!!   Cheesy  it's a pisser really... at first i was like what the fuck but then i realized it's their sign of affection...

anyway in some of these videos i watched one 15 year old boy attending Mesa Arizona high school with a significant case of dyslexia that was so bad he and his parents couldn't wait for him to reach 16 so he could legally quit high school was put into a test study along with other students and faculty... his results were so significant they went onto become the best results achieved by any who has ever taken the course... he did so well he turned his education career around and graduated at the top of his class in GPA from that point on...  educational skeptics challenged this child even after school administration provided records of his academic achievements before and after, so the child's parents and the creator of the program agreed to have the child tested by reading the book "ben Hur" and answer a 100 question test that included complicated true and false questions, sections where the child had to interpret in writing sections throughout the text and essay questions had to be answered....  the child finished reading the book in less then 5 minutes and scored over 90% in comprehension in what appeared at first to be a rigged test in order for him to fail!!!!  this was years ago and the child went onto become a chemical engineer...

in another video i watched an English speaking Taiwanese woman at a $1000.00 US dollar a single day seminar read the book called "the pearl" in less then three minutes or so and score close to 100% on comprehension tests... she had the complete ability to recall details of what people looked like based on the authors descriptions... she was able to recall the color of a dress one character wore in a non significant passage of the book...  so for those who worry that it is always nice to slow read so that you can recall things like this well i'm pointing out it is clearly not necessary as a comprehension level of even 50% shows you have absorbed intimate details enough to be considered an average reader.

here's the website for ZoxPro which is the originator of the system... there are five short videos that run down the length of the webpage, and as you move down to the second video it's located on the right hand side but the other four can be found dead center of the webpage itself....  at the bottom on the right are testimonials... do keep one important thing in mind though and that is you need to be able to completely relax in order to be able to do this but one of the claimed benefits of the program is it increases the ability to completely relax once you've mastered the technique, so as opposed i am to taking medications i just might use a prescription to be able to relax since that still remains a real issue for me...  Cheryl is going to have no problem with this i'm positive about it, but me, i'm a gonna have some problems unless i take a mild benzo or something... i was thinking ativan since that one seemed to agree with me the most... any opinions on what you would take if you were me? does it make any sense to use a mild dose of a benzo for just one week in order to develop the skills to do this expecting i just might gain t he ability to finally be able to relax once and for all for a change?  i think it's worth it but i'm curious what you guys think...

http://www.zoxpro.com/?hop=jajeisan

i'm going to post a new thread on one iof my favorite websites called TasteKid... if your an avid reader looking for new books or authors to check out or you like a particular band and would love to discover similar music then TasteKid is for U!!!

Thanks for the info, it sounds very interesting!!! And I will check out that Tastekid site.

Sometimes Benzo's are necessary for me because I am so high strung and sometimes it is hard to concentrate. I have had a script for Valium for years, and I use it from time to time. I like it because it is long lasting.

Ativan works very well, it's quick but not long lasting. It is very good for panic attacks. Try it & see if it helps.

yeah, i still have about 100 or so 1mg ativan tablets in the kitchen cabinet somewhere the last time i looked... i haven't touched it in close to a year now but i'm sure they're still good to use... i'm thinking of breaking a tablet in half and trying it to see if it'll put me in the correct mind state...

and i'll post a link and a full description of tastekid in a separate thread so you'll have a good feel of some of Emmy's many features...
