Hey Ramji...Lithium is what keeps me here. The other meds come and go, but I have to have the Lithium. I don't know of any side effects I've had from it other than this metal taste that I sometimes get in my mouth. The dentist checked out all of my fillings and said they were fine and told me that it may be the Lithium causing it, but my pdoc hasn't said that, so IDK. Wow, five meds...how do you feel about that? I take 4 and I feel like I'm poisoning my body. I've really been stressing about it lately, but I guess that could be a result of the fact that things aren't going so good for me now. I hope you do well on the Lithium, I think you will. What is the dosage? I take 1200mg, but it has been raised over time. I think I started on 300. Doesn't it seem like we are poisoning ourselves by putting Lithium in our bodies? For heavens sake, there are batteries made from Lithium. Is it the same kind? IDK...I hope not. Huh?

Hi Ramji....

i have known a lot of people who have been very satisfied with lithium and if you want to try it, then i say go ahead..

my grandmother took it for years, as well.  it helped her.

i tried it, and lost all my motor skills.. i have terrible side effects from almost everything.  so do NOT take my experiences to heart, PLEASE. cuz, i'm weird.. believe me.

good luck~ ~francie

Hey Ramji,
I love Lithium, can't live without it. DJ said that it made such a difference when I was first diagnosed that I put up with all the initial blood draws. Now they only draw blood 4x per year.
It helps make life better & my other meds mix well with it.

My daughter goes and gets her blood work done every 6months, the doctor did say she could go for a year if she would like, I told him we would pay for it every 6months.

Hi,
I was told that I could gain loads of weight, get acne and my hair might start falling out so I was scared to take lithium

You know what med I want to take??? One that makes my skin look beautiful, my hair luxurios, makes me lose weight, and makes my bi-polar be cured for good...Does anyone know of a doc that prescribes a pill with those specific side effects?

Well I haven't started lithium yet and I gained 30 to 35 lbs from various antidepressants over the past couple years ... and I used to be so fit and strong.  I was always in better shape than most men half my age. I have managed to lose a little weight in the past couple of weeks.
I'm sitting here having my morning coffee with acne medicine all over my face.  I'm 52 ... second puberty maybe?

Ramji,
Not everyone gains weight from lithium[I didn't] nor did I get acne. What I do get is help with mood swings. I think it is a drug that doesn't get enough credit for what it does. It is the best mood stabilizer out there[next to Depakote] My Shrink calls it the Gold standard of treatment for Bipolar.
Why haven't you tried it yet? Nothing to lose....possibly much to gain.

Yeah, lithium can be great stuff for what ails ya--it will give you a tremor and make you thirsty, but that is usually outweighed by the benefits/

paz, how long have you been on lithium?  and what about the metalic taste? i know it use to be the standard and forqot why so many many years ago i was taken off of it. i'm looking to try something else again since going off seroquel. i know you've said this before but what do you take with it?  do you work hard at not gaining weight or has it just not been a problem because all the other meds even depatkote had weight gain for me.  do you notice any other side effects? thanks,

I have been on lithium for about 7 years it works great for me. I have only two side effects, tremors and dry mouth, nothing else.
