Interesting, everyone on here says it's great, not really sure why the doctor hasn't offered it to me then? Could I take it in conjunction with Abilify?

Yes, what High says is true...I have BP1 with ultradian cycling[ultra, ultra rapid cycling] and lithium has truly helped to save me. I take other meds too, but lithium is key in my treatment. But, everyone is different, and I hope that Lithium can help others as much as it as helped me.

Cathy I have not known a Psyc to prescribe those 2 together. Kinda like you Which ever one works the best for you. The Abilify is in the newer class of drugs.  Lithium has been around for many yrs. I will say though, that I have clients who take less than the rec dose (this tested and worked out by Psyc) and they still have good response with lithium. Blood work should be done on a regular basis. At a very low dose, blood work does not, interesting enough, even show the lithium, but it still seems to be working. As with all things in life, some are psychological. I think  it is which med works the best for you, as an individual and your circumstances. I also see that the Abilify seems to be prescribed more to the younger generation. We are absorb things different, so as we know they all work different for each person.

Thanks for the information. I have just had my dose increased of Abilify to bring down my mania so I guess I'll see how that goes and if I feel it's working, great, if not I'll ask the doctor about Lithium. Thanks again  Smiley

just wondering if lithium is mainly given to people with bipolar 1?
is it to prevent the manic episodes only? or does it also help with the depression?
I suffer more with depression so I am not sure if it would help me

I'm on both Abilify and Lamictal among other things... and the combo seems to work great for me.

I take lamictal and I have had no side effects with it but it stopped working and I started lowering the dosage and took something else with it, that did not work for me so now I am slowing increasing to 400mg which is the highest I can go and then I might try something else with it if i need to.

Among the little-mentioned side-effects of lithium can be instability and difficulty walking--primarily due to dehydration. I had this twice--medical professionals not trained in psych can get all excited about it--they want you to take an ambulance to the ER. All you need is some hydration and rest--take a long nap and it'll go away.
