Hi, I just started taking Abilify (Aripiprazole) yesterday morning, it made me feel nauseous in waves and had mild diarrhea, has anyone else had these symptoms? It is either a side effect from the drug or a reaction to the lactose it contains (I'm lactose intolerant but don't normally react to the small amounts in tablets). Can anyone tell me if this will go away in a week or something? Seeing doctor next weds. Have been taking the tablet with food to try and minimise nausea, is this a good or bad thing?

The most common adverse reactions in adult patients in clinical trials ( ? 10%) were nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, akathisia, anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness.

It should go away in time, but if it is very bothersome to you, discuss it with your doc.

I only tried abilify for a couple of weeks (can't remember why I stopped), but I've got a nausea story to tell....My pdoc put me on Valium 10mg a few months ago. Over time, it wasn't doing anything, like I was just eating candy. She raised the dosage to 20mg, and everytime I took it, it made me actually vomit. I called and told her and guess what she said...she said that Valium did not cause nausea and that I must just be eating something that is not reacting well with my stomach. I said yeah, I'm eating Valium and you are right, it's not reacting well with my stomach. They haven't taken these meds, the only know what the meds are supposed to do, and we are the test rats. Maybe I had a stomach virus she said. I don't ever get any illness period that we don't end up passing around the kids, my husband and me. Noone else was sick, and they never got sick, but my vomiting stopped as soon as I stopped taking the Valium...

Cathy i hope your side effects subside after a short period of time.

I took abilify and really loved the stuff, but had to quit because i had a very rare side-effect (couldn't breathe well during allergy season and they attributed it to the abilify)....

take care

I felt a little nausea when first starting abilify--nothing else. I find it to be hard to get used to--I am used to having my mind really nailed down by an antipsychotic, and abilify seems a little looser--more room to feel and think.

So far I would agree, I currently feel kind of hormonal as I get used to the change but I suspect in a week or two I will feel much more "myself". Fingers crossed.
