Well, since summer has hit I thought I would warn those of you who didn't know about heat and seroquel. Be careful when mixing the two. It can cause dehydration and if you are not careful heatillness. After all the years I have been taking Seroquel, I just found this information out. I don't think it is too much of a concern if you take it at night. I think it pertains more so to if you take it dduring the day, especially high doses.

However, I will be cautious when we go on our vacation in August.

P.S. - I know there are other meds that have this same warning, I think Lithium is one, but I can't remember.

phyllis that's an important warning i don't know why it doesn't get more attention.  noone ever warned me i thought it was just my imagination.  i would get so hot and tired i thought i'd die and i thought i was just really really out of shape.  i don't know if geodon has the same effect but that's why i swim now in the am and i only walk on the treadmill with a fan and plenty of cold water.

Found this out about Geodon:

Geodon may interfere with the ability of your body to adjust to heat. Therefore, avoid high temperatures and high humidity.
http://www.fda.gov/cder/consumerinfo/druginfo/geodon.HTM

They also have a warning about it  here emergencymanagement.wi.gov/docview.asp?docid=556 and other places as well.

Lithium is one that you need to be careful of, and stay out of the sun. Thanks for the warning about Geodon, since I take both Geodon & Lithium, I will doubly careful. I will also give my pdoc a piece of my mind about not telling me about the Geodon.

If your medication keeps you out of the sun, make sure you're still getting enough vitamin D.

Thanks for the reminder Brian, I drink Lactaid with vitamin D, and I take a multivitamin with vitamin D, so I hope that covers it.

I have wondered lots about taking vitamins, and if they really help. I take so much medicine already that it just feels wrong to push down more. It just makes me feel like a robot on legs by taking a pill to control every function of my body.

I am going to post this warning about lithium again--particularly if you are taking seroquel also and get dehydrated--two cups of coffee will do it--you may find that you can't walk, and that your sense of balance is disturbed--medical professionals like paramedics, who are not trained in psych, can get all excited about this--it is a lithium side-effect--you need to hydrate yourelf and get some rest--it is very scary if you don't know what is happening to you!

If you are taking Lithium, make sure you stay away from grapefruit juice.  Somehow it interacts and can cause toxicity.  Many of the drugs we take make us sensitive to heat.  Not sure why but it certainly can make vacationing in the summer very difficult.

seems like if it were grapefruit juice that other acid type juices would also affect the lithium

Grapefruit and Seroquel do not mix well together either.
